Version 1

In the past, I always stayed in my country during November. But that year, I got to travel abroad for the first time, to the US, around Thanksgiving. It was my first time experiencing Thanksgiving, which was new because I’m not from America. It was kind of like our Spring Festival back home, with families gathering and eating special foods. But there were differences, like seeing a big whole turkey on the table, which was unusual for me. They also had cranberry sauce, something I’d never tried before.

I was lucky to be invited by a host family to join their Thanksgiving celebration. I was able to bring along a couple of friends from my country who didn’t have plans, so it was nice not to be alone. Most people I knew went back to their hometowns for Thanksgiving, so it was good to have somewhere to go.

Thanksgiving Day started early, with everyone excited to spend time together. People finished their work or school early, and by 3:00 p.m., everyone was already home, which was different for me. The next day, I was surprised to see so many people out shopping for deals at the malls. It was a culture shock for me to see how busy everything was during this time in the US. Visiting in November was a really interesting experience for me, with lots of new things to see and learn about.

1. Do you think people in your country have long enough holidays?

It’s tricky because while we do have some long breaks like National Day and the Spring Festival, not everyone can fully enjoy them. Some still have work or other things to do, so they don’t get a chance to relax. Only a few people can really enjoy the long breaks, and for some, they might not feel long enough. For example, if you have a 5-day break, you might spend the first three days getting ready, leaving only a little time to chill out. Some might want even longer breaks, while others might prefer shorter ones, so it’s hard to say for sure.

2. Which holidays are popular in your country?

The most popular holidays in our country are the Spring Festival and National Day. These are the longest holidays we have, happening in January or February and on October 1st. They’re a big deal, kind of like our version of Thanksgiving and Christmas combined. It’s a big deal if you don’t go home to your family during these times because everyone is really excited and looking forward to it. Even adults get excited, but for young people, it’s even more fun, especially because they often get money during the Spring Festival, while National Day is more about taking a break.

3. Are there any popular places for holidays in your country?

For certain holidays, there are popular places where people like to go. For example, during the Dragon Boat Festival, people like to be near rivers because that’s where they have the dragon boat races. And during National Day, it’s cool to be in the capital city to see the parade and other fun stuff. So, there are certain places that go with certain holidays, and going to those places makes the holiday feel complete.

4. What are the differences between old and young people when spending their holidays?

Both old and young people have stuff they need to do before they can relax on their holidays. But younger people usually have more freedom and might not have to help out as much with getting ready for the holiday. On the other hand, older people might have more responsibilities, like buying food and giving gifts, especially during the Spring Festival. Kids can just enjoy the holiday without worrying about these things, but older folks might find holidays more stressful because of all these extra things they have to do.

5. Do you think having holidays helps people learn about other countries’ cultures?

Yeah, holidays can teach you about other cultures. For example, learning about Thanksgiving can give you a sense of American culture, just like our holidays show our cultural values. Holidays often include traditions and practices that reflect a culture’s beliefs and customs. By experiencing or learning about holidays from different countries, people can get a better understanding of different cultures and traditions.

6. Why do some people dislike holidays?

Some people might not like holidays because of all the stuff they have to do. During holidays, there can be pressure to show off or meet certain expectations, especially with family. And sometimes holidays can lead to arguments or criticism from others, especially when people feel like they need to impress or compete with relatives. It’s not really the holidays themselves that people don’t like, but more the challenges and expectations that come with them.
