During the pandemic, when everyone was unable to go out and enjoy fine dining at restaurants, I took the opportunity to learn how to cook steak. It all started when the pandemic hit, and people were staying at home. I became engrossed in watching Gordon Ramsay’s MasterChef and similar shows. I had always wanted to try steak, but I had never attempted it before the pandemic due to various delays. However, with ample time on my hands during the pandemic, I was fortunate enough to be able to visit the nearest butcher shop and get a decent cut of meat.

Learning to cook steak wasn’t as easy as I thought. I discovered that achieving the perfect level of juiciness and tenderness without using any sauce or marinade was quite challenging. I watched a lot of Gordon Ramsay’s tutorials, as he had various techniques to share. I also looked into how Marco Pierre White prepared steak, but I ultimately preferred Gordon Ramsay’s approach.

The first time I tried cooking steak, I was quite disappointed. The frustration of the pandemic added to my disappointment. However, I didn’t give up. I tried multiple times, experimenting with different cooking methods and using a cast iron pan. I seasoned the steak and tried different cuts, such as ribeye or sirloin. I even added garlic for added flavor, following the techniques I learned from TV. Throughout this journey, my kitchen became my training ground, where I gradually honed my skills in cooking steak, I am proud of myself.

What kinds of things can children learn to cook?

I believe children can learn to cook a variety of dishes. It’s good to start with non-bake recipes, such as simple pies that only require a few ingredients like cream and can be refrigerated for a few hours. Another example is eggs, which don’t need much oil or heat to prepare, making them a suitable option. Children can also learn to make toast, which can be paired with eggs or other toppings without requiring high heat. When it comes to vegetables, children can learn to prepare easy-to-cut items like baby carrots, baby corn, corn kernels, and salads that involve tearing lettuce rather than using a knife. It’s important to choose recipes and ingredients that are safe and appropriate for their skill level.

Do you think it is important for children to learn to cook?

Yes, I believe it is important for children to learn how to cook from an early age. Learning to cook helps them become self-sufficient and prepares them for the future when they will need to make their own meals. It also teaches them valuable life skills, such as understanding nutrition, following recipes, and practicing kitchen safety. Cooking can be a creative and enjoyable activity, and children who learn to cook may develop a lifelong passion for it.

Do you think young people should learn to cook at home or at school?

I think it’s beneficial for young people to learn to cook both at home and at school. Cooking at home allows them to practice in a familiar environment and develop confidence in their skills. They can learn family recipes, explore their culinary interests, and experiment with different ingredients. On the other hand, learning to cook at school provides a structured environment where they can learn from experienced instructors, understand kitchen organization, and work collaboratively with others. It exposes them to a wider range of techniques, cuisines, and cooking styles. Both settings offer unique learning opportunities, and a combination of home and school cooking experiences can provide a well-rounded culinary education.

How enjoyable do you think it would be to work as a professional chef?

Working as a professional chef can be both enjoyable and highly demanding. While it may seem glamorous and exciting, it is also a challenging profession that requires a great deal of skill, dedication, and hard work. Chefs have to make creative decisions while considering the business aspects of running a kitchen. They face the pressure of meeting high standards and pleasing food critics. Additionally, with the rise of social media, one negative review can potentially harm a chef’s reputation. Being a professional chef involves not only cooking but also planning, budgeting, menu development, and marketing. It can be a rewarding career for those who are passionate about food and willing to embrace the challenges that come with it.

What skills does a person need to be a great chef?

To be a great chef, one needs a combination of culinary skills, communication skills, and leadership abilities. Culinary skills include proficiency in using knives, understanding cooking techniques, and creating appealing presentations. Plating skills are also crucial for a chef to present dishes attractively. Effective communication is essential, as chefs need to convey instructions clearly to their team members in a high-pressure kitchen environment. They must be able to delegate tasks and ensure that their standards are met. Leadership skills involve managing the kitchen staff, maintaining a positive work culture, and being adaptable to changing situations. A great chef should also have a passion for food, a willingness to learn and innovate, and a dedication to maintaining high-quality standards.

How much influence do celebrity/TV chefs have on what ordinary people cook?

Celebrity and TV chefs have a significant influence on what ordinary people cook. They serve as a source of inspiration, introducing new recipes, techniques, and flavors to a wide audience. Celebrity chefs often showcase a variety of cuisines, making them accessible and appealing to home cooks. They have the ability to popularize certain ingredients or cooking methods, sparking trends in the culinary world. Moreover, their shows and cookbooks provide step-by-step guidance, making it easier for people to replicate their recipes at home. In recent years, there has been a shift toward making cooking more approachable and simplifying complex dishes, making it easier for ordinary people to try new recipes and experiment in the kitchen.
