IELTS Writing Task 2 – Education
IELTS Writing Task 2 – Education
In some countries, the government fully funds all university courses while in others, students have to pay for their own education.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and give your opinion.
Introduction
Some countries offer free education at the tertiary level, while others require students to shoulder this expenditure. In my view, based on the advantages and disadvantages, it is ideal for the government to provide financial assistance instead of a full scholarship.
Body 1
Students who receive a full scholarship won’t have to worry about their tuition, allowing them to focus on their studies. Unfortunately, this expenditure becomes a burden to society; hence, the government needs to impose higher taxes among its citizens. Meanwhile, countries without free education have lower taxes, as they don’t include this in their budget. However, students in these countries may have to resort to working or go into student debt, putting the burden on themselves.
Body 2
Another disadvantage of a full scholarship from the government is that it requires its people and future citizens to work harder to sustain growth and create jobs. This is necessary for the future graduates to secure a job after graduation for the government’s investment to bear fruit. Although it might seem beneficial, constant growth cannot be sustained, as there are new graduates every year, potentially causing a collapse in society. Additionally, students with government scholarships are bound not to work outside, as per the usual agreement between the government and students.
Body 3
On the other hand, countries without free tuition will not encounter this problem. However, their best people might go to other countries to work, missing an opportunity to utilize their talent. Since these graduates don’t owe the government, they are free to choose their desired company. Hence in the long run, countries without free education might lose talents as they will go directly to other countries and make significant income, a lost opportunity for the countries both economically and talent-wise. Countries, especially in developing countries whose earning degrees and starting working in different countries, waste these potential talents because of the country’s failure to invest in their people’s skills.
Body 4
In my opinion, it is better for the government to allow financial assistance, especially for those seen as potential. Half of the total tuition fee is ideal, and depending on the capability of the students, it can be increased; this way, more people can have less burden in their academics. Moreover, upon graduation, in order for them to return what the government invested, it is ideal to serve for at least two to three years working to return the investment.
Conclusion
In conclusion, countries with full extremes when it comes to paying and not paying for college pose problems such as financial burden from each side, and the consequences might appear in the long run. Hence, it is ideal to have a certain regulation that allows half responsibility in order to even out the cost and benefits.
