IELTS Speaking Part 2 and 3 : Famous People

IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Famous People

Describe a famous person you are interested in
You should say:
• Who he/she is
• How you knew about him/her
• What he/she was like before he/she became famous
And explain why you are interested in him/her

As a teacher myself, I am fascinated by Maria Montessori, who is known for creating the Montessori teaching methodology. While there were many teachers before her, she stands out as one of the most prolific figures in children’s learning.

I first learned about Maria Montessori during my studies in child psychology, where I delved into her teaching methodology and how she revolutionized children’s learning.

Prior to her rise to fame, I have little knowledge about her early life, but I imagine she started like anyone else, with a dream. Through hard work and dedication, she pursued her dream until she achieved great success.

What particularly interests me about Maria Montessori is that as a woman during her time, she faced significant challenges in balancing her career, work, motherhood, and being a wife. However, she managed to excel in all aspects and became renowned for her innovative teaching methodology, which is still widely used today.

Therefore, Maria Montessori is a person I greatly admire and find inspiring, both as a teacher and as a woman.

Do you think the media is putting too much attention on famous people?

Yes, the media is putting too much attention to famous people, but I do understand that media companies need to profit by featuring popular artists or famous individuals to attract advertisements and secure more commercials on their platforms or websites. This leads to an overwhelming amount of attention given to them.

Do you think famous people are necessarily good in their fields?

Well, I have seen highly talented artists who are not widely famous, while there are others who are mediocre but have a large following. For example, the founder of Facebook may not be the best in coding , yet he became famous. Similarly, Steve Wozniak, the inventor of Apple Computer, took a backseat to Steve Jobs in terms of the spotlight.

What are the differences between famous people today and those in the past?

In the past, particularly in the realm of movie stars, individuals had to undergo numerous auditions before achieving fame. Nowadays, it is much easier due to the influence of social media. Additionally, in the past, famous individuals required significant talent and skills to gain recognition in their respective fields. However, with social media, anyone can become an expert and gain fame in their particular craft. For instance, there are many TikTok influencers who are entertaining but lack raw talent.

What kinds of famous people are there in your country?

In my country, we have movie actors who frequently appear on the big screen. We also have politicians, such as President Xi, who are prominent figures. Lastly, there are artists such as painters or sculptors, like  Zeng Fanzhi, who gain fame for their creative work.

Why are some kids popular at school?

There are various ways for kids to become popular at school. One of the simplest ways is by being attractive or good-looking, which can instantly gain recognition from peers. Another way is by excelling academically, making them popular not only with teachers but also with other students. Lastly, being athletic, like myself, can make you popular if you showcase interesting skills that people talk about.

Why do some people become famous but not successful?

  1. Well, success is subjective, and there are many famous people who never achieved overall success. For example, some artists in the West achieved commercial success but never found personal fulfillment. They may have died at an early age without starting their own families. Others might have become famous but never truly lived fulfilling lives, and as a result, they cannot be considered successful individuals.
  2. There are numerous possible reasons, but some people become famous for a particular act or achievement, which doesn’t necessarily guarantee success in life. A notable example is Nikola Tesla, one of the genius minds of the 20th century. However, he passed away without having a family and lived alone in a small apartment.
