IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Science

Do you like science?

I don’t really like science, but it’s the foundation of our universe, so we apply it. I’m not fascinated by it, although I respect people who dedicate their lives to it. I consider myself a person of science because most of what I do involves scientific methodology, from research to my work as an engineer. I follow scientific procedures, but discussing science isn’t my priority.

When did you start learning about science?

Learning science has been mandatory since first grade. In primary school, we studied general science and biology. Next, in my fourth year of high school, we studied physics, which I found confusing and not well-taught. In college, I focused on digital electronics, where I learned about electricity, Ohm’s law, and transistors.

Which science subject is interesting to you?

Besides electronics, I’m interested in chemistry. Recently, I’ve been exploring psychology, specifically how our chemical composition affects behavior. It’s fascinating how the chemicals released by our bodies can influence our actions and moods.

What interesting things have you done with science?

As a child, I enjoyed tinkering with electronics and troubleshooting. I was intrigued by the idea of perpetual motion and free energy, despite knowing the laws of thermodynamics. In chemistry, I learned about fractional distillation by making table salt from saltwater. These experiments were quite interesting.

Do you like watching science TV programs?

Not all science TV programs interest me, but as a child, I enjoyed “Beakman’s World.” My sister loved it, and eventually, I did too, though it was canceled after a few years. I also liked “Popular Mechanics for Kids,” partly because I had a crush on the female host. Despite this, I learned a lot about science from these shows.

Do Chinese people often visit science museums?

Visiting science museums is part of our curriculum and homework, but children are more excited about hanging out with friends than the museum itself.
