IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Fixing Things

Can you fix things?
Did anybody teach you to fix things when you were a child?
Do you think it is necessary for people to learn to fix things?

1. Can you fix things?

– Yes, I can replace broken lights and fix door hinges. I am also capable of performing basic troubleshooting for devices, such as performing a soft or hard reset.

2. Did anybody teach you to fix things when you were a child?

– – My dad is a handyman, so he taught me the basics of fixing things around the house. Some examples include replacing a broken faucet, and I have also learned how to solder motherboards, although I’m not very proficient at it yet.

3. Do you think it is necessary for people to learn to fix things?

– – Yes, it is important because it allows you to be independent and avoid relying heavily on other people. Having knowledge of basic repairs can save you a significant amount of time and effort.

4. What do you do when a thing is broken and cannot be fixed?

I tried all possible steps to fix the issue, but if I exhaust all options and it remains unresolved, I will attempt to salvage usable parts before considering purchasing a new item. For instance, when I had my old laptop, I attempted all the solutions available on the internet, but none of them worked. As a result, I decided to keep the hard drive and invest in a new laptop

5. Do you prefer fixing things yourself or hiring someone?

It depends on the complexity of the problem. For small things like a loose hinge or a flickering light, I prefer fixing them myself since it’s quicker and saves money. However, for anything involving electrical wiring or plumbing, I’d rather hire a professional, since a mistake there could be dangerous or end up costing more to repair afterward.
