IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Doing Sports
What sports do you like?
Well, I don’t really play a lot of sports. However, when it comes to watching, I do prefer volleyball, especially collegiate volleyball. I find it really entertaining, especially if I’m watching my college’s team. Another sport I enjoy is chess. I like the game, but I don’t consider myself a chess genius who can beat others.
Where did you learn how to play?
When it comes to volleyball, I started watching it and asked my sister. Fortunately, she was able to answer all of my questions. I remember in my second year of high school, we discussed the rules, including court measurements, regulations, and the game rules. About chess, besides terminology, I mostly learned in online.
Did you participate in sports when you were young?
Yes, unfortunately, I had to participate in sports as part of our curriculum when I was young. I remember not being able to dribble a ball properly, and people would laugh at me. I didn’t have a good experience with sports. I also accidentally hit our PE teacher with a volleyball and a table tennis ball in a single day. It was embarrassing for me at that time, although looking back, it’s quite hilarious.
Do you think students need more exercise?
Yes, definitely. Nowadays, children have a sedentary lifestyle, spending a lot of time using their phones or sitting down. When I was growing up, we had many opportunities to play outside. My friends had the courage to climb big trees, while I would hesitate. I think facing challenges and experiencing physical activities is a part of growing older. It helps develop resilience, burn fat, improve breathing, and overall fitness.
Do you know any people who are good at sports?
Yes, my friend John is a local basketball player in this area. He excels in multiple sports. However, as he got older, he faced several injuries. It’s difficult to sustain a family solely through basketball, so he eventually pursued a career outside of sports. He was one of the MVPs in our area and school, showcasing his talent. I also know Efren “Bata” Reyes, a famous billiards player who hails from my hometown. I remember seeing him before he became well-known, and he has since become a local legend. So, I know a couple of people who are exceptionally skilled in their respective sports.
Do you think it is important for people to exercise?
Yes, especially when it comes to physical well-being. The more you practice, the more your body becomes tolerant of physical exertion. If you cannot walk for a long time, it can become problematic as you age and encounter tasks that require physical effort such as climbing stairs or running. I was fortunate to have experienced physical activities as a child, which made it easier for me as I grew older. Nowadays, many young people struggle with activities that do not involve air conditioning, but exercise helps build endurance and resilience.
