IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Internet

1. When did you start using the internet?

I consider myself a digital native. From a young age, the internet is common for us. Though I didn’t have my own phone or computer, we had Wi-Fi at home. My dad often told me that when he was my age, they didn’t have the internet. I can’t really imagine that, but I feel blessed to live in a world with easy internet access. Unlike my dad, who spent most of his time in libraries or with books.

2. How often do you go online?

I’m online all the time since my phone is always connected to the internet. The only times I’m offline are when I’m in a dead spot with no cellular data or when I’m sleeping, as I switch off my internet to avoid notifications. But most of the time, I’m always online.

3. How does the internet influence people?

The internet influences people in many ways. It opens us up to different cultures, unlike in the past when cultural exchange was limited. With the internet, we can watch and see people in real-time, which normalizes different cultures. Social media is a perfect example of this influence. The internet has a big impact on how people think and behave.

4. Do you think you spend too much time online?

Not really. I’m always connected, but it doesn’t mean I’m spending too much time online. I’m still a student, so most of my time is spent in the classroom and focusing on my studies. I go online mainly to do homework. I rarely have time to browse social media, except on weekends or during long vacations, which doesn’t happen often due to the heavy workload.

5. What would you do without the internet?

I’ve been asked this before, and I honestly don’t know. I grew up with the internet and can’t imagine life without it. It’s a mystery to me, and I hope it’s just a theoretical question. I can’t picture a future without internet access.
