IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Advertisement
What kind of advertising do you like?
I’ll be honest—nobody really says they love a specific type of ad. It’s more about what we can tolerate. For me, I’d say I’m into Super Bowl commercials. They’re one of the most anticipated ads of the year. They’re super expensive, so people are always curious about them, especially during halftime. And then, there are those viral Thai commercials. They’re not so much about the product, but more about the message behind them. They usually tell a really strong, emotional story, which I love. It’s the kind of ad that’s worth talking about with friends. So yeah, I’d say Super Bowl ads and Thai commercials are the ones I can actually look forward to.
Do you like advertisements?
Honestly, I’m not sure anyone actually likes advertisements. But I do enjoy witty commercials. I’m all about clever wordplay and breaking the norm. A lot of ads where I’m from are just “we’re better than the competition” or something like that, which gets old fast. I mean, it’s 2025—everyone can claim their product is the best. But what I really like are ads with a strong message or something funny. They stand out more because they make you think or at least make you laugh. So, yeah, I’m into ads with creativity and a cool idea behind them.
Do you see a lot of advertising on trains or other transport?
It’s pretty interesting because, compared to the US where every corner has an ad, the trains here don’t have as many. You’ll see the usual ads, but they’re not in your face like in places where I’ve seen a lot of ads. In fact, even in places like Florida, they’re everywhere! Here, public transport might use old product banners to cover up patches or things like that, but it’s not really for advertising. Recently, though, I’ve seen a few ads on top of the buses or trains for jobs and other products, but that’s only been a handful of times. Honestly, I don’t think it’s that common yet.
Is there an advertisement that made an impression on you when you were a child?
Yeah, there’s one that really stuck with me. It was a charity ad in Manila, and it was honestly pretty traumatic for me as a kid. It showed a child’s hand, covered in flies, and the message at the end was something like “What if it’s too late? Donate now.” It really hit me hard. I remember feeling like I needed to save the world. At that time, it gave me so much stress because I thought I had to do something about it, and I felt like it was all on me. It was a powerful ad, and I’ll never forget it.
