A couple of years ago, my family and I went on an island-hopping adventure abroad. It was an exciting and somewhat different experience. During that trip, we had the chance to capture a moment in a photo. This particular picture includes my entire family, including my grandparents. It holds a special place in my heart as it reflects a moment of pure happiness.
We were all present in the moment, free from discussions about work or school. It was a time before the pandemic, and life was simpler. Although I don’t glance at the photo regularly, whenever I do, it brings back fond memories. It serves as a reminder of a time when life was uncomplicated and everyone was immersed in the joy of the moment.
Looking back, I realize that such moments are rare now. My parents are occupied with their responsibilities, and my grandparents have become more fragile. Our lives are filled with academic commitments, and the simplicity of that time is a distant memory. The place where the photo was taken has also changed. Once undiscovered by tourists, it has now become saturated and lost some of its original charm.
Despite these changes, the photo makes me happy. I keep it near my desk as a reminder of the importance of family and the value of cherishing moments, especially those we may not realize are the last. It’s a nostalgic glimpse into a time when joy and fun were pure and uncomplicated.

1. Do you think people are taking too many photos these days?
To some degree, I would say that as a society, we take too many photos nowadays. In the past, pictures were considerably more expensive due to analog or traditional photography, involving developing mechanisms. It was somewhat inconvenient and costly. As a result, people took fewer photos unless it was essential. Now, with digital photography, taking pictures is cost-free, and our storage capacity has expanded to hold thousands of pictures. In the past, being considered rich meant having the ability to store 36 photos in your traditional camera. I confidently assert that we now take an abundance of pictures.
2. What kinds of photos do people like to take?
People typically like to take photos of things they want to brag about or showcase, such as food, their physique, face, and outfits. These are aspects we want to highlight as special compared to others. Social media is flooded with such content. Additionally, travel experiences are often documented to portray a superior lifestyle compared to others.
3. Do you think people take more photos now than in the past?
Yes, Another reason is our increased consumption of digital media. In the past, looking at pictures might have taken an hour before boredom set in. With social media, we can scroll through hundreds of images in an hour. To satisfy the constant demand for exposure, content creators, including individuals, need to post frequently. Unlike the past, where posting once a week was sufficient, now, to stay relevant, you need to upload five to six images regularly.
4. Do you think equipment is important for photography?
Yes, there are cases where equipment is crucial for photography. Aerial photography, especially using drones, has become a privilege not everyone possesses. Traditional cameras are still valued, but advancements include the use of drones for aerial views. While this equipment can be expensive, it’s an essential investment, particularly in the digital age.
5. Do you think being a professional photographer is a good job? Why?
When evaluating a good job, considering both a good salary and enjoyment is crucial. Unfortunately, based on what I’ve observed from friends in the photography field, it’s not as lucrative as it used to be. The rise of smartphones has made professional-grade cameras more affordable, leading to more amateurs entering the field. The respect and compensation once associated with professional photography have diminished.
6. Why do some people like to post their photos on social media?
Aside from showcasing superiority, people post photos to demonstrate a luxurious lifestyle and the availability of free time. Posting frequently implies a higher social status. Everyone, including myself, now has a social media page and shares pictures regularly, some even every hour. This constant posting is not just narcissistic but also serves as a potential income source through monetization and building a fan base.
