IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Video Games

1. Do you play video games?

Yes, I enjoy playing video games. I started playing around the age of 8 but didn’t have my own console until I was 12. I was quite addicted to arcade gaming as well, to the point of cutting classes just to play. Though I got caught a couple of times by my parents and teachers, they understood and emphasized the future consequences of my actions. Eventually, I moved away from that habit, but I still play on weekends. I follow the principle of working hard and playing harder, so even now, I indulge in gaming, especially retro games, which remind me of my youth. For example, I recently finished GTA San Andreas, a game I started playing back in 2004, during the pandemic.

2. Would you watch others play video games?

Absolutely. Watching others play video games is similar to watching sports; you can learn a lot from experts. Observing how they play helps you understand the game better, learn new strategies, and even what not to do. I owe some of my success in games like GTA San Andreas to YouTube tutorials, where I learned proper mission strategies. So, yes, I enjoy watching others play as it’s both entertaining and educational.

3. Do you think people spend too much time playing video games?

It’s subjective and depends on the individual. Spending too much time on video games becomes evident when it starts affecting essential aspects of life, like sleep and nutrition. For example, if you’re sacrificing sleep or meals to play, it’s likely excessive. I’ve experienced this myself when I skipped meals to spend more time gaming. It’s crucial to find a balance and ensure gaming doesn’t interfere with other responsibilities or well-being.

4. Do you prefer playing video games alone or with others?

Personally, I find playing video games alone more relaxing. It’s a way to unwind and address personal issues while navigating virtual challenges. I often have introspective moments and find solutions to real-life challenges while gaming alone. Playing with others is fun, but it tends to distract me from this internal dialogue. Whether playing cooperatively or competitively, gaming alone allows me to be fully immersed and in my element.
