IELTS Writing Task 2 – 犯罪 Educating Criminals

Study shows that many criminals have low levels of education. For this reason, some people believe that the best way to reduce crime is to educate people in prison, so that they can get a job when they leave prison. Do you agree or disagree?(犯罪)

Introduction

It is suggested by some people that in order to reduce crime, it is better to educate incarcerated individuals so they can secure decent jobs after serving their time. However, I strongly disagree with this proposition as it can have negative effects and potentially worsen the situation.

Body 1

While it is true that ex-convicts often face challenges in finding employment after their release, educating incarcerated individuals is not a viable solution. There are several factors to consider, such as the amount of funds the government would need to allocate for their education. Moreover, additional resources would be required to ensure the safety of teachers who would be working in secure centers like prisons. Providing books and materials would also add to the expenses. Therefore, instead of directing funds towards law-abiding citizens, they would be allocated to a group of people who are serving their sentences, which is not a favorable idea.

Body 2

Another reason why this proposal is flawed is that it could create a loophole for individuals seeking government scholarships. If they believe that committing a crime would allow them to continue their studies with financial support, it would encourage more people to abuse the system, leading to an increase in crime.

Body 3

Lastly, when it comes to unemployment, especially for individuals with a criminal record, lack of education is not the primary issue. It is the presence of a criminal record itself that affects their employability. Regardless of one’s educational background, serving time or having a history of committing crimes, especially violent ones, significantly hinders job prospects. For instance, even if someone has advanced their education and is a qualified accountant, if they have embezzled money in the past and served their sentence, employers will not be willing to hire them in an accounting position. It is the record that matters, not just the level of education.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although it may seem like a good suggestion to provide education to incarcerated individuals it is not ideal to incentivize them with the promise of a better job. This approach can create various issues, including the misconception of a loophole that may lead more people to commit crimes.
