IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Concentration

IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Concentration

Did you stay focused in class when you were a child?

I can say that I had difficulty focusing in class because there was a time when I tended to eat less and would skip breakfast, which made me feel hungry and lose concentration. Sometimes my teacher would ask me what was happening, and eventually, I was advised to start having breakfast. However, it was still challenging for me to concentrate. I would get sleepy or distracted, thinking about TV shows or other things. Also, I never saw myself staying engaged and just wanted to sit and listen to one person for the entire class. I know that I get easily distracted, so it was a struggle for me.

Are you a focused person?

As much as I want to say I am a focused person, to be quite fair, I’m not. I tend to concentrate on one thing, but the moment I see something that excites me, I completely forget about the first task and move on to the second one. This pattern continues, and by the end of the day, I haven’t finished anything. It’s not a critical issue, but I somehow need constant reminders to stay focused. Sometimes I even need a bit of time alone just to maintain my focus.

How do you stay focused?

As someone who struggles to stay focused, what I do is make sure that my room is clean before I start anything else. If my room is untidy, I tend to get distracted and start working on cleaning instead of focusing on my tasks. Unfortunately, once I start cleaning, I often come across old stuff, and the whole day is wasted again. So, to stay focused, I have to complete all household chores before settling down to work.

Is it easy to stay focused in a noisy environment?

It’s really hard for me to stay focused in a noisy environment. Even voices and music can easily irritate me and disrupt my concentration. When I get upset, it clouds my mind, and I tend to pick fights with the source of the noise or anyone nearby. I become unproductive, so it’s challenging for me to work in such conditions.
