IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Game You Enjoy

Describe the game you enjoyed playing when you were younger

You should say:

  • What the game was
  • Where you played it
  • Who you played it with
  • And explain why you enjoyed playing the game

Version 1

When I was younger, I didn’t really play any sports until my third year in high school when I started playing basketball with my friends. It was something I really enjoyed because, at the time, I didn’t have many male figures in my life. Playing with my male peers was quite exciting, and I had never really had the opportunity to engage in sports before.

Even though I wasn’t the best player in the game, my friends were patient with me. When I first tried playing, I was quite unfamiliar with the rules, and when I played with my classmates, they were very forgiving of my mistakes. It was as if they accepted me as a friend first and a basketball player second. They knew I wasn’t very skilled, but they still let me play.

What made playing basketball enjoyable was the fun and antics that came with it. Of course, we had our fair share of accidents, and these became the stories we talked about, especially when we reached adulthood. There were times we got into arguments with others while trying to play on different courts, but these experiences added to the adventure.

One of my friends even twisted his ankle landing unevenly during a game. Despite the occasional mishaps, playing basketball allowed us to break a sweat, have fun, and create lasting memories.

After playing basketball, we would often hang out to relax. In our country, there were small stores where we could buy a liter of Coca-Cola and some snacks. We’d enjoy our drinks and snacks, and then we’d head back home. We were tired, but the camaraderie and the excitement we shared made it all worth it. Those were truly happy memories for all of us.

What games do kids like to play now?

Recently, I’ve noticed that some kids have started to enjoy playing badminton. From what I remember, this sport usually becomes popular among high school students, after which we have traditional ball games like soccer and basketball.

Do boys and girls play different games?

When they start as kids, most of the games are very similar, like playing tag. However, as they grow older, boys tend to have a tendency to be more physical, which causes them to drift apart. Girls tend to play less contact sports compared to boys, who are more comfortable with physical activity.

Are outdoor sports important for kids?

One of the first priorities is their ability to be outside, getting decent fresh air and sunlight. Additionally, their ability to socialize with others and engage in physical activity is crucial. This becomes increasingly important as they get older, as it helps them become more comfortable with socializing.

Why do people play different games now than before?

It has something to do with time availability and options. A few decades ago, people could enjoy sports like football and baseball, which could last for hours. However, nowadays, we are often busy, and we tend to play games with shorter time spans. Furthermore, we have more indoor activities like computer games and social media, which have changed the overall dynamics of games.

Is winning important in games?

The feeling of winning is like a rush in your body that makes you feel good. The reason why it is important is that it gives you an opportunity to improve yourself. In the future, you may encounter someone who is better than you, and you will strive again for the win. This creates a cycle of continuous growth. Whoever said that winning is not important has never experienced being a winner.

Which is better, individual games or team-based games?

While individual games can be fun, they sometimes become repetitive as you only play by yourself. The better you become, the less stimulating the game becomes. However, with team-based games, the people around you add some spice to the game. They introduce an element of unpredictability that makes the game exciting.
