IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Friends

Would you invite friends to your home?

My dad always said, “A home is your sanctuary.” Growing up, that stuck with me. No matter how close I am to a friend, I’ve never felt comfortable inviting them over. Even my closest friends—friends I’ve known for 10 years—don’t know where I live. I’m all about privacy. In the US, it’s common for friends to just wander into your house, even your bedroom, but for me, my home is off-limits. If a friend needs help, I’d rather meet them at a café. I can talk to them, support them, and still keep my home as my private space. That’s how I see it—my home is my sanctuary, my escape.

Do you prefer to spend time with one friend or a group of friends?

It depends. If we’re eating, it’s always better with a group. Sharing food just makes it more fun and lively. But if it’s a personal issue, like something stressful, I prefer one-on-one time.
Take my best friend Andrew, for example. When he lost his job, we’d meet every Saturday, just the two of us, to talk things out. It was what he needed at the time. But once life got better for him, we started hanging out with other friends too. So, yeah, it really depends on what’s going on.

Do you have a friend you have known for a long time?

Yeah, I’ve known Neil since second grade. We were classmates in high school, and later, we even worked together. That’s about 30 years of friendship! We’re not super close, but he’s the kind of guy I can rely on when it matters.

What do you usually do with your friends?

Food is our thing. My closest friend Andrew and I love to eat. We go to restaurants or cafes, share snacks, and just talk—about struggles, fun stuff, whatever’s on our minds. Sometimes, we even do a little café-hopping, but we keep it light. Sandwiches, coffee, maybe dessert. It’s about good company and good food.

Where do you often meet each other?

There’s this café we love called Eggs and Breaky. It’s perfect because it has two locations—one near Andrew’s place and one near mine. On Saturdays, I usually go to the one near his place, but sometimes he comes to mine. We have breakfast, coffee, dessert, and just chat. Our meetups sometimes last until lunch, so we can end up staying there for hours.

Do you often go out with your friends?

Before the pandemic, Andrew and I used to meet every Saturday without fail. It was like a ritual. We were both in a good place financially and loved spending time together. But after the pandemic, things changed. Andrew got sick and couldn’t drive much, and I moved farther away. Now, we don’t go out as often, but we still stay in touch.

How important are friends to you?

I care about my friends a lot, but my parents taught me to be independent. For me, family always comes first. Friends are great for sharing your thoughts or having fun, but I also believe you can survive without them. If you need to talk about something serious, you can always turn to a professional. Friends are companions for certain seasons in life, but they’re not everything. That’s how I see it.
