IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Doing Sports
IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Doing Sports
1. What sports do you like?
I really like basketball and volleyball. These are the games I love to watch and play. I started liking them in high school when I made more friends, and we decided to play together. Eventually, I got better. If basketball and volleyball are not available, I also enjoy playing table tennis, though I’m not as good as my peers. It’s also fun to watch, especially when the rallies are long. I’m a fan of esports too, but I’m not as skilled as the players I watch.
2. Where did you learn how to do it?
I don’t have any formal training in any of these sports. It’s just a matter of observing and learning the rules over time. After watching and researching, I got opportunities to play. There were a lot of mistakes at first, but with practice, I became proficient. Once I got better, people started inviting me to play with them, which helped me improve further.
3. Did you do some sports when you were young?
Not much. I lived in an apartment in the middle of town, so it was cramped and we didn’t have enough time and space to play many sports. We did watch a lot of basketball, though. I only started playing in the park when I went to senior high school. We moved to a place with a nearby playground, which started my journey to becoming more sporty.
4. Do you think students need more exercise?
Absolutely. Students need more exercise because they tend to live sedentary lifestyles, which can affect their health. Exercise helps them feel better physically and mentally. When you exert yourself physically, it also helps your mind rest. That’s why students need more exercise, whether it’s sports or any physical activity.
5. Do you know any people who are good at sports?
A few of my friends are good at sports. We had a classmate in high school who pursued basketball and is now in the intercollegiate league, which is great. I don’t know him personally, but we saw him on social media getting awards. We also have many sports celebrities in China, like Yao Ming, but I don’t know them personally; I just know of them.
6. Do you think it is important for people to exercise?
Yes, it’s very important for people to exercise. If they don’t, their bodies become weak. Constant exercise helps build resistance, making the body stronger and less prone to illness. Exercise also benefits mental health; the more you exercise, the clearer your mind becomes.
7. Should schools encourage young students to take more physical exercise?
Absolutely. Schools should encourage physical exercise, but it should also start at home. Parents should encourage their kids to exercise because schools already have a lot of academic demands. Schools can reinforce this idea, but exercise should always begin at home.
