IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Collecting Things
IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Collecting Things
- Do you collect things?
- Are there any things you keep from childhood?
- Would you keep old things for a long time? Why?
- Where do you usually keep things you need?
1. Do you collect things?
There have been a couple of attempts for me to collect things, especially toys from fast-food establishments. However, it never really ends up completing, so it’s like always restarting. At one point, I started collecting memorabilia from high school, but sometimes it was accidentally discarded, so I had to start over again. This continued during my younger years, and now I still collect a few things, annoyingly, it’s more about collecting parts. Especially in my profession, we have a lot of gadgets, so we collect salvage parts for some unknown reason, even though we never use them. I collect broken mice, discarded motherboards, and various cables.
2. Are there any things you keep from childhood?
As of now, since I moved to different houses, I don’t really collect things, per se. As far as I remember, I don’t have many collections. The ones I have from childhood and high school were discarded or given away when we moved to a new house when I was 14. I outgrew most things, but I have a few stuffed toys that I kept more as memorabilia. It’s a bit shameful that I never really kept things from my childhood besides my ID. Come to think of it, my mom said before that to recollect some pictures, like ID pictures and probably some old clothes, but that was back in high school.
3. Would you keep old things for a long time? Why?
If there is enough space, then yes, but it eats up a lot of space. Sometimes it’s better to let go. I would say just take a picture, archive it, but most of the time, it’s better to discard. I’m not proud, but I never really keep old things for a long time. I still have a couple of things from my mom, but for me, it’s like a waste after getting my first Happy Meal or my first Batman action figure. I would keep some work-related documents, just in case someone files a lawsuit, and I need evidence, but not for nostalgic purposes.
4. Where do you usually keep things you need?
Right now, in the place where I live, I have a bag next to me. If there’s anything I need, I can just grab it and run. All the things I need, from clothes to personal information, ID, and cash, are in that bag. There’s also a box, like a second tier, where, in case of a disaster, it could at least survive, especially since it’s a bit waterproof. I’m always next to my gadgets, as my work requires me to have a lot of gadgetry with me, and they are usually stored in a big box.
