Public Places is a short but interesting topic in the IELTS Speaking Part 1 question bank for September–December 2025. With only two questions, the examiner expects each answer to be genuinely developed and extended. These model answers show you how to take simple questions about everyday behaviour and turn them into impressive, analytical responses.
IELTS Speaking Part 1 Public Places 2025: All Questions and Model Answers
Question 1: Have you ever talked with someone you don’t know in public places?
Model Answer:
Although I am not someone who initiates conversation with strangers as a default behaviour, there are certain situations where it happens quite naturally and I find myself genuinely glad that it did. Waiting rooms, delayed trains, and neighbourhood events are the contexts where I have had some of the most unexpectedly interesting conversations of my life. That is why I think the physical design of public spaces matters more than most people realise. When a space is arranged to encourage lingering and informal interaction rather than just efficient movement, the chances of genuine human connection increase noticeably. Despite the social tendency toward looking at phones in public, I think most people remain open to conversation when the conditions feel right.
📌 Band 7-8 Vocabulary: initiates conversation, unexpectedly, informal interaction, lingering, genuine connection
Question 2: Do you wear headphones in public places?
Model Answer:
While I use headphones regularly at home and during exercise, I am increasingly deliberate about not wearing them in all public situations. The reason is partly practical and partly about maintaining a certain quality of awareness and presence. Wearing headphones in a busy street or on public transport does provide useful sound insulation and helps me focus, but it also creates a kind of perceptual barrier that I think contributes to the disconnection and social isolation that researchers have been noting in urban populations for some time. That is why I try to use them selectively rather than as a default setting for any time I am outside my home. Despite the genuine benefits they offer, the habit of constant audio insulation has a social cost worth considering.
📌 Band 7-8 Vocabulary: deliberate, sound insulation, perceptual barrier, social isolation, selectively
