IELTS Writing Task 2 -Advertising New Products

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasize that their products are new in some way.

Why is it? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Introduction

In the world of advertising, it is now common practice to promote products as new or innovative, and this strategy is employed because people are more attracted to something novel. However, this constant emphasis on newness may lead to a negative trend, as consumer expectations continually rise and some businesses might fail.

Body 1

The allure of exploring something new excites consumers and is a key reason why marketing and advertising companies, push for their products to be perceived as fresh. For instance, tech products like the latest iPhone are promoted as new every year, even when the technology itself is no longer groundbreaking. This repetition creates a perception of innovation, driving people to make more purchases. Companies adopt this approach because, to some extent, it effectively boosts sales by presenting products as continually novel.

Body 2

While this may seem trivial, it could have negative consequences in the long run. The constant pursuit of newness may lead to unethical practices, such as providing false details to the public. This, in turn, could encourage dishonest business practices, including the theft of technology or ideas to produce something new. This trend could create challenges for small businesses, making it difficult for them to thrive in a fiercely competitive market where larger companies dominate. Some tech startups introduce new concepts, but they often face challenges as larger companies attempt to stifle them by forcing patent ownership, leading to a discouraging environment for smaller players.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while advertising products as new drives sales, it may have long-term negative consequences. This emphasis on constant innovation can lead to unethical business practices and hinder the growth of smaller businesses in the face of fierce competition from industry giants.
