Since I was in primary school, I have always wanted to be a math teacher. I am interested in teaching math in any setting, be it a cram school or a regular school. The job is easy to find, and there are even online opportunities to teach math. However, I personally prefer the traditional classroom setup. Being a math teacher requires a variety of skills. Firstly, you need to have a strong foundation in basic arithmetic and advanced mathematical concepts.

You should be able to think quickly and work with numbers. For example, if someone asks you for a calculation, you should be able to do it mentally. Additionally, having good teaching skills is essential. It’s not just about knowing math; you also need to know how to effectively teach math to others. Classroom management and the ability to discipline children without being overly strict are important aspects of the job. I find this profession very interesting because, as someone who loves numbers, it’s a job I am truly passionate about.

For me, numbers are like a mystery box waiting to be unraveled, and the excitement of finding the solution is exhilarating. I was inspired by my own teachers, who were enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and guiding students through problem-solving processes. Teaching kids how to solve problems feels like opening a mystery box, and the joy of discovery is incredibly rewarding. I can envision myself doing this for the rest of my life. If time permits, I may also consider tutoring math outside of the classroom. This is something I genuinely desire.

Furthermore, I truly enjoy interacting with people and, though it may sound a bit narcissistic, I appreciate the sound of my own voice. Combining these aspects gives me a sense of fulfillment in this type of profession. Moreover, when it comes to math, making mistakes is relatively easy to correct. Unlike other subjects that may have different interpretations, math has a standardized approach, and while there may be multiple methods, the final result remains the same. Numbers don’t lie. Teaching arithmetic to children or even adults is a job I would love to pursue in the future.

1. What are the most popular jobs for young people in your country?

Currently, there are many popular jobs in my country, with the third most popular being in the technology field. Jobs such as programmers, coders, and web developers are in high demand. These jobs require a diverse set of skills but offer lucrative pay. The second most popular job is in the entertainment industry. To excel in this field, individuals need to have a specific talent that captivates and entertains people. It can be demanding and require long hours, but the compensation is rewarding.

Finally, the most popular job among young people is being an influencer. While it may be considered unconventional, being an influencer is a legitimate job where individuals create and share content in exchange for money. To become popular, one must work hard to produce quality content or promote themselves, attracting subscribers and potential sponsors. This type of job offers flexibility and the potential for significant earnings through royalties and sponsorship contracts.

2. What is the difference between high-income and low-income jobs in your country?

Aside from the disparity in income, high-income jobs carry a certain societal status and garner respect. On the other hand, low-income jobs may lead to people doubting your abilities, and your opinions might not carry as much weight. High-income jobs, regardless of whether they involve labor-intensive or office work, often face intense competition. Many individuals vie for these positions, including fresh graduates, which creates a competitive job market. Consequently, an oversupply of candidates can drive down wages in high-income fields. Conversely, low-income jobs can become more lucrative in the long run if fewer people are willing to pursue them. For instance, jobs like septic tank cleaners, which were traditionally low-paying, have seen increased earnings due to the lack of individuals willing to perform such tasks. Thus, there is a shifting dynamic between high-income and low-income jobs in my country.

3. When is the right time for young people to start making serious plans for their future careers?

From my perspective as someone in their late 30s, I believe young people should start making serious career plans around the age of 17. This age acts as a golden ratio, where individuals are old enough to be taken seriously but still young enough to make mistakes. This is important because if one makes a serious plan at, say, 20 years old, they might feel compelled to stick with it even if it turns out to be a poor decision. However, if they make plans around 17 or 18, they have the opportunity to make course corrections and explore different career paths.

Personally, I made several mistakes when I was 18, but I have no regrets. It was when I started taking my career seriously at the age of 25 that I realized I didn’t have the luxury of going back and starting anew. By that time, I felt compelled to excel in my chosen industry in order to thrive by the time I turned 40. Hence, the crucial period for young professionals to start making decisions about their future lies between the ages of 17 and 18.

4. Which jobs have the highest salaries?

According to a TED Talk I once watched on high salaries, three factors should be considered when determining the highest-paying jobs: the required level of training, the difficulty of the job, and the industry. Based on these factors, one of the highest-paying jobs in my country is that of a petroleum engineer. Even at the entry level, petroleum engineers can earn as much as a CEO of a medium-scale company. This field demands expertise in extracting petroleum, and the industry itself is financially robust, making it highly rewarding. Additionally, jobs in the sea-based industry, such as working on a cruise ship, offer high salaries due to the luxury nature of the industry.

5. Which jobs pay low wages but require a high level of skills?

There are several jobs that require a high level of skills but offer low wages. For example, sewage managers or engineers who specialize in water dynamics are highly skilled individuals who ensure the proper functioning of sewage treatment plants. Despite their expertise and potentially holding master’s degrees in plumbing engineering, their salaries tend to be low. Similarly, teachers are often underpaid despite their important role in shaping the future workforce. They possess specialized skills in education, but their wages do not always reflect the level of skill and dedication required for their profession. Another example is police officers, who undergo extensive training in defensive driving, basic combat, and weapon handling. However, their salaries may not always align with the level of skill and responsibility they hold.

6. Do you think it is important for secondary schools to offer careers advice to students?

Yes, I believe it is crucial for secondary schools to offer career advice to students. Secondary school serves as a pivotal stage in a student’s life, as it is the final phase before entering the workforce for those who do not pursue higher education. Providing career advice during this period plants a seed in students’ minds, helping them understand the importance of career planning. Although not all students will immediately grasp the impact of such advice, it sets the foundation for future decisions. Secondary school is the first opportunity for students to have serious conversations about their career paths, as the earlier years of education may not be taken as seriously. While the impact of career advice may vary among individuals, it remains an important aspect of their development during this critical stage of decision-making.
