IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Actor

Describe a film character played by an actor or actress whom you admire
You should say:

  • Who this actor/actress is
  • When you saw the film
  • What the character was like in this film
  • And explain why you admire this actor/actress

Version 1

His name is Jackie Chan, and he is renowned as one of the most prolific Chinese martial artists, not only in Hong Kong but also worldwide. He has achieved such popularity that everyone recognizes him by his stage name. I cannot recall the exact time I watched one of his films, as it has been quite a while, but his movies are frequently broadcasted and are also available on Netflix. Jackie Chan often portrays the role of a police officer, such as Detective Lee in the Rush Hour film series. Detective Lee embodies the stereotypical image of a righteous and incorruptible police officer who fights for justice. He partners with Chris Tucker’s character, and initially, they have their differences, but eventually, they become a strong team. The chemistry between the contrasting personalities of the energetic Chris Tucker and the silent Asian cop is truly wonderful.

Returning to Jackie Chan himself, he is an admirable individual. Despite his flaws as a person, his work ethic is remarkable. He has always been known for performing his own stunts, often risking injury, and he consistently takes care of his fellow cast and crew members. There was even a viral video where his team, who were all around 50 years old, showed up in tears, demonstrating the care he had for his people. Such dedication and concern for others are enviable traits in Jackie Chan and contribute to his enduring legacy.

Version 2

Although the movie Ip Man has been portrayed by many stars, I would say Donnie Yen represented him perfectly. Donnie Yen has become a key figure in Chinese cinema as one of the most skilled martial artists. In Ip Man, he gained Hollywood fame because of his role.

Ip Man is the master of Bruce Lee, and the movie tells his story during World War II when China was occupied by the Japanese. It shows how he fought the invaders, demonstrating Chinese pride and fighting only with his fists, without any superpowers. Donnie Yen’s portrayal was very human and inspiring, resonating with many people, including those abroad. His performance was not like a superhero; he expressed real pain, especially in the scene where his friend was killed. This emotional depth made him a favorite in Hollywood, leading to roles in films like Star Wars and John Wick. Donnie Yen became very popular because of his accurate portrayal of the character.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Artists

Are actors or actresses very interested in their work? Why?

  • Well, I cannot be confident about this, but as someone who has worked, I know that sometimes we are not passionate about our jobs; we are more interested in the money rather than the art or craft itself. It’s possible that some actors choose the profession solely for financial reasons, while others are genuinely passionate about it. I have observed many actors who appear to dislike their job. For instance, there are cases where individuals are born into influential celebrity families, commonly referred to as “nepo babies,” and they are pushed into the industry. However, there are also actors who continue to love acting even in old age. It varies from person to person.
  • I’m not sure; I’ve never been in a place with many actors or actresses. But I do know that acting is a job. Sometimes people like their job, and sometimes they don’t, just doing it for the money. It’s possible that some people in the industry do it only for financial reasons, while others may follow in their parents’ footsteps despite not being truly interested. There are also many Hollywood scandals where people are unhappy with their careers and may even harm themselves. So, we can never know for sure.

Is being a professional actor or actress a good career?

  • I cannot claim that being an actor is a suitable career choice for everyone. Unlike becoming a doctor, where the path is clear once you complete a certain number of years of education, pursuing a career as an actor is uncertain. Regardless of your education, your success in this field often depends on various factors. Additionally, establishing connections within the industry is crucial to receive opportunities and projects. Unfortunately, there are instances where individuals like Harvey Weinstein manipulate artists to gain personal advantage, which can be distressing.
  • Compared to other careers like law, medicine, or engineering, professional acting might not be as stable. You can be famous one day and forgotten the next. Unlike other professions where you can advance through hard work and study, acting often depends on looks. Many Chinese dramas feature actors who are not necessarily skilled but are attractive. If you’re not considered good-looking, it might be harder to succeed in this field.

What can children learn from acting?

  • I believe there are various aspects to consider when discussing acting, and as a child, one can learn the art of acting and witness how people possess the ability to fake tears or smiles, as well as control and channel their emotions effectively. It is a talent that not everyone can master.
  • Children can learn to be more articulate through acting because they need to use the right words and control their emotions. Acting teaches them to manage their tears, laugh on cue, and be versatile in expressing different emotions. Starting early can help them develop these skills.

Why do children like special costumes?

  • I believe one reason children feel special and powerful when wearing costumes like Superman or Spider-Man is because they can imagine possessing the powers and abilities of those characters. For example, during Halloween, children often choose to dress up as their favorite princess or character. It’s a matter of imagination and the empowerment that comes with embodying those characters through costumes. It allows kids to tap into their imagination and experience a sense of empowerment.
  • Children like special costumes for different reasons. Little boys often become the character they are dressed as, like Spider-Man or Superman, fully immersing themselves in that role. In contrast, when girls or young women wear costumes like a princess, they might just elevate their own status rather than fully transforming into the character. It’s an interesting difference.

What are the differences between actors or actresses who earn much and those who earn little?

  • Firstly, A-list actors often have creative decision-making power when it comes to movie projects. For instance, actors like Marlon Brando had the ability to make changes to the script if he didn’t like it. He has reached a level of popularity and fame where he was given the privilege of not having to memorize his lines. Instead, he relied on earpieces to receive their his dialogue while filming. On the other hand, B-list or C-list actors do not have these options. They have less influence over the creative aspects of the film and typically follow the directions given by the director. They have limited control over their roles and often have to adhere to the decisions made by others. A notable example is Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ) when he initially started in the Iron Man film. He was not the main character and held a lower status in the industry. As he gained more popularity, his influence and decision-making power increased. He was able to negotiate his price and have more say in the creative process of the movies he was involved in.
  • Besides the obvious difference in salary, high-paid actors, or A-listers, have more control over their roles. They can influence the script and plot, or even change things they don’t like. They often play themselves in movies, especially in action films. On the other hand, B-list actors don’t have this level of control and are more likely to take on various roles.

What are the differences between acting in a theatre and that in a film?

  • I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of an indie film during my high school years and to perform in theater productions. Performing in theater is truly exhilarating, as you can directly experience the energy of the live audience. It’s a unique feeling to perform multiple shows in one night, which tests both your organizational and acting skills. You may need to handle props, speak into a microphone while running which can be both emotionally and physically challenging. In addition to theater, I also had the chance to participate in a short film. This experience was different as it involved more retakes and reading lines from a script. The focus was on capturing specific moments rather than sustaining a character over an extended period. Working with other artists in the film industry was inspiring, as they provided guidance and corrections to improve the way I spoke and portrayed my character. There is a greater level of control in filmmaking, with the ability to make adjustments and reshoot scenes to achieve the desired outcome.
  • I’ve had the chance to experience both. Acting in theatre is very rewarding because you perform live and can feel the audience’s reactions directly. It’s exhausting but fulfilling. In film, there are many people behind the scenes, and scenes are shot in segments, so you might not always feel the emotion as strongly. You have to summon the emotions needed for each scene, even if you don’t experience them in the moment.
