IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Music

  • What music do you like?
  • What music do you dislike?
  • Do you often listen to one type of music?
  • What music do your friends like? Do you enjoy the same type of music?
  • What’s the most popular type of music where you live?
  • Which singer or musician would you like to see in person?

1. What music do you like?

I’d say I’m a person who enjoys a wide variety of music genres. Thanks to my ability to understand different languages, I can appreciate music from diverse cultures. Among these genres, rock holds a special place in my heart. Speaking of rock bands, my absolute favorite is Linkin Park.

2. What music do you dislike?

Light music isn’t really my cup of tea. It tends to make me feel a bit drowsy. The only time you’ll find it on my playlist is when I’m trying to sleep.

3. Do you often listen to one type of music?

I’m quite flexible when it comes to my music choices. Depending on my mood, I’ll switch between different genres. Sometimes I’ll go for rock or rap, and other times, when I’m feeling mellow, I might opt for some sad tunes. And when it’s time to wind down and sleep, Bossa Nova finds its way into my playlist.

4. What music do your friends like? Do you enjoy the same type of music?

Around half of my friends share a similar taste in music, and a few of them have introduced me to pop and R&B. However, I haven’t fully embraced those genres. It’s alright, though, because having diverse music preferences among friends adds a unique flavor to our circle.

5. What’s the most popular type of music where you live?

Living in a dorm has its perks, especially since most of us belong to the same age group. It’s pretty cool that the majority of us share a fondness for the latest rock music style. While a few individuals might have their own preferences, there’s a unanimous consensus that rock music is undeniably fantastic.

6. Which singer or musician would you like to see in person?

It’s unfortunate that I haven’t had the chance to witness the entire lineup of Linkin Park in concert. As we’re aware, the untimely passing of one of their members was truly saddening. Nonetheless, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they might organize a concert in the near future.

Do you know how to play any musical instruments?

When I was young, I had the opportunity to play the piano and a couple of instruments like the violin. However, due to the hectic nature of my schedule, particularly with my academics, my mother, whom I had requested to continue the lessons, eventually gave in and we stopped at the age of 10, as far as I recall. To some extent, I did regret it because if I had pushed myself, I could have been proficient in at least one or two musical instruments compared to my peers. They managed to be good at a particular musical instrument, but then again, I preferred to excel in academics. As they say, actions have consequences.

Have you learned about music at school?

We had a couple of lessons about music itself, but most of our music learning occurred outside tutorials. We delved into an in-depth understanding of notes and musical instruments. At school, it was more about exposing the history of music, how it started, and the historical and cultural influence of that music on a particular society.

Do you think all children should have music lessons at school?

Why not? There are students who excel in subjects like math and science, while others may excel in subjects like music. It’s a good way for children to showcase their proficiency and knowledge in different areas. Instead of competing in just a few subjects, if they excel in music, they can feel confident and proud of their abilities in that particular area, even if they are slower in other core subjects.

Do you think it is easy to learn to play a musical instrument?

Well, I would say it’s easy to learn to play a musical instrument, but the challenge lies in playing them really well. Pressing the keys on a piano, for instance, is easy, but the question is, can you play a symphony? That’s a different challenge altogether. So, yes, it’s easy to learn the basics, but it’s challenging to properly read and apply the notes while playing, as you see in concerts. It requires practice to become a master at it.
