IELTS Speaking Part 2 and 3 : Useful Job
IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Describe a job that is useful to the society
You should say:
- What job it is
- How you know about this job
- What types of people do this job
- And explain why you think this job is useful to the society
Sample 1
I believe the job of a doctor is one of the most important in society. Since my family is in the medical industry and sells medical equipment, I’ve seen firsthand how vital doctors are. My parents have always been personal witnesses to their contributions to society. As a child, I used to visit my pediatrician, and this helped me understand the importance of hospitals, clinics, and the role doctors play in keeping people healthy.
The profession of being a doctor has existed for millennia, and there are countless books about their contributions to civilization. Even in ancient China, there are records discussing the importance of doctors and medical professionals. This remains true today.
I believe that doctors possess unique skills and characteristics. First, they are highly knowledgeable individuals who are experts in their field. They are required to study a vast amount of information, from medicine to medical procedures, and they can absorb and apply this knowledge much faster than most people.
Second, doctors are individuals with a strong sense of mission and purpose. They also have to be compassionate and caring. I think these qualities are essential because being a good doctor is not only about having the technical skills to cure diseases but also about understanding and connecting with patients on a personal level. Compassion and empathy play a huge role in helping patients feel at ease and recover better.
Finally, I believe doctors are incredibly important to society because they save lives. In the past, when there were only a few doctors, many people suffered or even died because they couldn’t access proper treatment. Without doctors, society would struggle to survive. They are essential in ensuring public health and maintaining a stable and functioning community.
IELTS Speaking Part 3
Do you think schools should provide career advice to students?
I believe schools should also provide career advice to students. Parents often give career advice based on their personal experience. However, schools, that includes teachers, principals, or even colleagues and senior students, can offer career advice from a different perspective. They provide insights that parents may not be able to give.
For example, my parents sell medical equipment, so most of their career advice might be biased toward their profession. However, if I ask a teacher, they may be able to give me more information, such as how their former students managed to get jobs outside the medical field. Teachers may also know about students who succeeded or failed in different careers.
Who should receive a higher salary, young people or older people?
I believe higher salaries should be based on competence and experience. If a young person has more knowledge or credentials, such as a master’s degree or a doctorate, they should have a higher salary compared to older people who did not finish college or only have a bachelor’s degree. However, older people with more experience who have worked at different companies should also earn a higher salary compared to fresh graduates. So, it depends on both qualifications and experience.
Do you think doctors should be well-paid?
So, I’ve had this conversation before, and someone said that for people to do their job really well, they need to be paid enough so that money isn’t something they worry about. That’s why doctors and other professionals charge higher fees—they can focus on their work instead of stressing about money. This is especially true for doctors and lawyers. A mistake from a doctor could be life or death, right? And a lawyer’s mistake could land someone in jail or ruin someone’s life.
CEOs face similar pressures—they make big decisions, and one mistake could destroy a whole company. So, these jobs, including doctors, should definitely be paid well. Plus, doctors spend so many years studying—like, 10 to 15 years. So, their pay should reflect that hard work and help them recover the money they spent on their education. Also, good pay motivates future generations to become doctors. If they’re not paid well, fewer people will want to become doctors, right?
What kind of jobs deserve a high salary?
I’d say delivery drivers deserve better pay. I’m not saying they need six-figure salaries, but think about the danger they faced during the pandemic. They deserve to be paid more, at least for what they’re doing. Delivery jobs can be tough—working under the sun, dealing with traffic, and sometimes handling difficult customers. It’s not an easy job, and it’s not something someone can do for years without burning out. I also think teachers should get higher pay. Teachers are really overworked in many places, and some are just focused on helping students pass exams instead of truly teaching them. That’s because they get bonuses for good exam results, but the actual learning part gets left behind. Teachers should be paid well so they can focus on quality education.
What kind of jobs receive a low income?
Unfortunately, low-income jobs often involve work that society doesn’t usually recognize, like cleaning septic tanks or working in sewers. These jobs aren’t glamorous, and they’re not going to make anyone rich. But they do offer job security because someone has to do them. It’s not a job people brag about, but it pays the bills and gives people a permanent position. The same goes for funeral services. While it’s not something for the faint-hearted, it’s a necessary job. It’s stable because, sadly, people die, and someone needs to manage those services. But because it’s a service, not a business to make huge profits, it tends to pay lower. These jobs are usually supported by government funding, so the pay can be somewhat stable but not high.
What kind of jobs are well-paid in your country?
In my country, jobs in STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—are well-paid. These fields are crucial for the progress of society, so if you’re skilled in these areas, you can land a good job with a five-figure salary at the entry level. And as you become more experienced, you can make six figures or more. For example, petroleum engineers make huge salaries, especially considering how tough and dangerous their job is. They have to know how to extract oil safely and manage the risks of working with it. Last I checked, even entry-level petroleum engineers can earn five figures in dollars. And when you think about it, that’s more than what some CEOs make! So, despite the job being hands-on, it can actually pay better than many office jobs.
