IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Small Business
IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Small Business
1. Do you know many small businesses where you live?
Although I know a lot of stores and shops nearby, I don’t really know the owners. I recognize a few faces, and we smile at each other when we meet outside, but it’s not very detailed. I often buy things from these small businesses, but it’s usually just a simple nod; nothing special.
2. Have you ever worked in small businesses?
I was privileged to work in a small shop when I was 12. My job was as a shop assistant, helping customers and retrieving large items for them. Since I’m a bit bigger, I handled the heavy stuff, especially for our senior customers. It was quite common for me to assist with the larger items.
3. Do you prefer buying things from big companies or small businesses?
It depends. For food, I prefer small businesses because they tend to charge less, needing only to cover their profit. Big companies often have overpriced food due to their higher costs for rent, staff, and corporate expenses. However, for groceries, I usually go to big companies because their prices are cheaper due to bulk selling. Small businesses tend to have higher profit margins for groceries. So, it really depends on the type of product I’m buying.
4. Have you ever thought about starting your own business?
Yes, I’ve been asked to start my own business or startup several times. However, I’ve faced challenges, especially with capital. Investors tend to be hesitant when they see someone without a business background. Despite having an engineering degree, I don’t have a business degree, which makes it harder to attract investment.
