IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Sitting Down

Do you find it easy to fall asleep when sitting on a sofa?

Yes, I do, especially if the sofa is comfortable. Even when I was younger, I’d easily drift off to sleep on a cozy sofa or chair. For example, whenever I visited my aunt, they had this couch where I’d sit, and within five minutes, I’d feel sleepy. Sometimes, I’d take a refreshing 30-minute nap there, and they wouldn’t mind.
Even at work, I’ve fallen asleep in a nice, ergonomic office chair—especially when the air conditioning was blasting and I didn’t have much to do. I’ve slept in less comfortable places too, so sofas are definitely not a challenge for me to fall asleep on!

When you were a kid, did you usually sit on the floor?

Yes, I did. Like most kids, I often sat or lay on the floor, even though we had a nice sofa. My mom didn’t like it because she worried we’d get dirty and spread it around the house.
As I got older, I stopped sitting on the floor. By the time I was 14 and grew to about 5’11, it became harder for me to sit and get up from the floor. So, I started using chairs more and never went back to sitting on the floor.

Do you feel sleepy when you are sitting down?

Sometimes, yes. If I haven’t had enough sleep or if I’ve taken medication, like a decongestant for a cold, I can feel really drowsy. Also, if I’m sitting in a very comfortable chair and not doing much, I might doze off. At work, I sometimes set a 10-minute alarm for a quick nap if I feel sleepy. I even drink coffee before the nap so I’ll feel energized when I wake up.

Do you always sit down for a long time?

Unfortunately, yes. My work involves managing multiple projects, so I sit in front of a computer for about 16 hours a day. I know it’s not healthy, and it has caused weight issues like trunk obesity.
I’m planning to buy or make a standing desk to help with this problem. Sitting for so long isn’t ideal, but it’s been a part of my job for the past 15 years.

Where is your favorite place to sit?

My favorite place to sit is in my room or home office. I’ve invested in making it as comfortable as possible. I have an ergonomic gas-lift chair that I bought two years ago. It’s sturdy and supports my weight well, even though I use it for 10–12 hours a day. Recently, though, the lumbar support isn’t as good as it used to be, so I might need to replace it soon. Still, it’s been my go-to spot for comfort and productivity.
