IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Sharing

1.Did your parents teach you to share when you were a child?

Unfortunately, since I’m the only child, sharing wasn’t very common in my household, including with my parents. Just to add, my parents were only children as well, so growing up, I never had anyone to share with. To be honest, I think that’s one of the reasons why I struggled to make friends because I always believed that what’s mine is mine. Sharing wasn’t something I was used to. As a result, when I was in elementary school, I tended to be a bit selfish because I grew up without the concept of sharing. Suddenly, other kids would start asking me to share things, which felt strange to me. However, when I started college and had roommates, I began to understand the importance of sharing to some extent, like sharing living space and ensuring that my behavior didn’t inconvenience others.

2.What kind of things do you like to share with others?

Later in life, I’ve come to appreciate sharing food. I might be selfish when it comes to my gadgets—I don’t like anyone touching my tools, computer, mouse, or even my phone. However, when it comes to food and drinks, I’m more open to sharing. I’d rather buy or cook a larger portion and enjoy it together with someone. That’s something I’ve started to find enjoyable. But when it comes to other things, like money, I’m still a bit selfish.

3. What kind of things are not suitable for sharing?

Talking about that, I’d say money isn’t suitable for sharing. It can ruin friendships, and financial resources are crucial. My parents always told me it’s okay to be selfish with resources rather than constantly giving away money and risking financial instability. They cautioned me about being overly giving and people-pleasing, warning that some may take advantage. They believe that being selfish in this regard allows you to help people become more independent rather than reliant on constant sharing. It might sound contradictory, but that’s the environment I grew up in.

4. Do you have anything to share with others recently?

I can’t really recall anything recent because I don’t often find myself in situations where I need to share. However, one memorable and somewhat challenging experience was when our company had to share our office space with another group temporarily due to maintenance issues. It was the first time we had to share our workspace, and I found it uncomfortable since I’m protective of my belongings. There was a moment when someone started using my computer without permission, which upset me. Luckily, my best friend, who knows me well, stepped in to handle it. But I was annoyed with him for agreeing to the sharing arrangement in the first place.
