IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Memory

  1. Are you good at memorising things?
  2. Have you ever forgotten something important?
  3. What do you need to remember in your daily life?
  4. How do you remember important things?

 1. Are you good at memorizing things?

Not really. I tend to understand things better if I grasp the concepts rather than memorizing verbatim. I’ve faced a couple of exams that required memorization, and I constantly struggled. Although I comprehend the overall idea, I prefer using my own words. Welcome to understanding things conceptually rather than memorizing word-for-word. Remembering things, however, is something I’m quite confident in. As I’ve gotten older, my memory isn’t as sharp as before, and I tend to forget more. But memorizing things word for word is not my strength.

2. Have you ever forgotten something important?

One instance that comes to mind is back on the 11th of November. I was working, and it was a long day. Suddenly, I realized I forgot that it was my mom’s birthday. I was very embarrassed because I didn’t greet her the morning after. It was so hectic that I didn’t even think to wish her. Fortunately, she understood and isn’t the type to celebrate birthdays. Still, as my mom, it’s essential to acknowledge and celebrate her birthday.

3. What do you need to remember in your daily life?

Even though I work in tech, I never really trust technology to remember things for me. I’m more of a manual person. I keep a notebook next to my desk all the time. Before going to bed, I jot down tasks or what I need to do the next day. In the morning, I read and update it. Writing things down yourself makes it easier to remember.

4. How do you remember important things?

Besides note-taking, there are various ways. I tend to check my Facebook for any significant events or celebrations in the history section. If there’s a history of celebrations, I might check it to remind myself. I used to have a system for checking friends’ birthdays, but I lost track. Now, I have to rely on constantly checking Facebook when someone has a birthday.
