IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Memory

  1. Are you good at memorising things?
  2. Have you ever forgotten something important?
  3. What do you need to remember in your daily life?
  4. How do you remember important things?

 1. Are you good at memorizing things?

Not really. I tend to understand things better if I grasp the concepts rather than memorizing verbatim. I’ve faced a couple of exams that required memorization, and I constantly struggled. Although I comprehend the overall idea, I prefer using my own words. Welcome to understanding things conceptually rather than memorizing word-for-word. Remembering things, however, is something I’m quite confident in. As I’ve gotten older, my memory isn’t as sharp as before, and I tend to forget more. But memorizing things word for word is not my strength.

Version 2

Not really. I struggle with memorizing things word for word. I tend to grasp the concept but find it challenging to recite things verbatim. For instance, when required to memorize a poem, I understand its essence but struggle to recall the exact words. In high school, memorizing speeches like Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” took me much longer than my classmates, who could memorize it within a week while it took me two weeks. So, memorization has always been a difficulty for me.

2. Have you ever forgotten something important?

One instance that comes to mind is back on the 11th of November. I was working, and it was a long day. Suddenly, I realized I forgot that it was my mom’s birthday. I was very embarrassed because I didn’t greet her the morning after. It was so hectic that I didn’t even think to wish her. Fortunately, she understood and isn’t the type to celebrate birthdays. Still, as my mom, it’s essential to acknowledge and celebrate her birthday.

Version 2

Unfortunately, yes. A couple of years ago, during a busy time, I forgot my mom’s birthday. I felt embarrassed, terrified, and upset because forgetting your mom’s birthday is not something any child wants to do. I apologized profusely, explaining that I wasn’t in the best mindset, and thankfully, she forgave me. It was one of the most embarrassing moments for me.

3. What do you need to remember in your daily life?

Even though I work in tech, I never really trust technology to remember things for me. I’m more of a manual person. I keep a notebook next to my desk all the time. Before going to bed, I jot down tasks or what I need to do the next day. In the morning, I read and update it. Writing things down yourself makes it easier to remember.

Version 2

While there are many things to remember daily, I believe it’s crucial to keep our goals in mind. Life throws various challenges at us, and it’s easy to feel like giving up. But remembering why we started in the first place can keep us going. Many people forget their initial motivations and end up giving up, so it’s important to hold onto that initial spark.

4. How do you remember important things?

Besides note-taking, there are various ways. I tend to check my Facebook for any significant events or celebrations in the history section. If there’s a history of celebrations, I might check it to remind myself. I used to have a system for checking friends’ birthdays, but I lost track. Now, I have to rely on constantly checking Facebook when someone has a birthday.

Version 2

Currently, I find jotting things down on a note to be the most effective method for remembering. I prefer using physical notes over digital ones because I feel more connected to the idea when I write it down. Research supports this, suggesting that writing things down helps clear the clutter from your mind and solidify memories. Many successful individuals, including CEOs, still rely on traditional pen and paper despite having high-tech gadgets. It’s a method endorsed by many motivational books I’ve read, as it seems to work wonders for memory retention.
