IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Hobbies
IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Hobbies
Do you have the same hobbies as your family members?
No, not really. I’m married now, and growing up, my siblings, my parents, and I didn’t share the same hobbies. I was the youngest, and there was a big age gap between me and my brothers and sisters, so my hobbies turned out very different. But thinking about it, one thing we did enjoy together as a family was eating. We’re kind of foodies in our own way—same passion for good food, even if we don’t always like being around each other. When I was younger, I was really into music, but no one else in my family shared that interest. Now, with my own family, I still don’t see a lot of shared hobbies, and honestly, that’s fine. Not everyone has to like the same things. For example, I’m into mobile games and computer games, but I see those more as personal downtime rather than a “family hobby.”
Do you have a hobby that you’ve had since childhood?
Oh, absolutely! Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been into computers. That’s why I ended up pursuing a computer course—it gave me an excuse to play games all the time and mess around with gadgets. One of my hobbies is tinkering with broken devices. I don’t do it as much now, but when I have time, I love fixing or upgrading old computers. I’ve collected a bunch of laptops and small PCs over the years. Some are just sitting on shelves after I make sure they’re working. It’s a fun hobby because it’s hands-on, and it feels great when I can bring something back to life.
Did you have any hobbies when you were a child?
Yes, one of my first hobbies as a kid was playing with clay. It started when McDonald’s gave out these clay toys, and I got hooked. Later, I bought cheaper clay and would spend hours making little things like houses. My mom didn’t love it—she’d always say my nails were full of germs from playing with clay—but I didn’t care. I’d stay in one spot for hours, completely focused. Unlike other kids who were into sports, I wasn’t that type. I preferred quiet hobbies like clay modeling or tinkering with stuff. I guess I’ve always been more of an indoors kind of guy.
Do you have any hobbies?
Now that I’m married, my hobbies have decreased—not because of my wife or family, but because I’m focused on my finances. I spend most of my time finding ways to earn more. One of my hobbies now is domain flipping and researching online. It’s interesting because it’s both fun and profitable. I post my findings on my blog, and sometimes I earn ad revenue from it. When I’m not working, I still enjoy playing retro games. These are games from the early 2000s that I couldn’t afford as a kid. Now I can download them for free, so it’s like reliving my childhood. You’d see games from 2004 on my desktop. Sure, modern games have better graphics, but for me, it’s about finishing the ones I missed back then. It’s a little trip down memory lane.
