IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Colors
IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Colours
What color makes you uncomfortable in your room?
Okay, so even though red is my favorite color, you won’t find it in my room. Red is such an emotional color—it sparks energy, activity, and even hunger sometimes. But for a room, I want the exact opposite vibe. My room needs to feel boring enough that you just want to sleep. That’s why I stick to white, black, and blue.
Now, too much white can feel sterile, like a hospital. And let’s be real—hospitals aren’t aiming for cozy; they just want you to rest but not get too comfortable. Blue, on the other hand, creates a sense of calm, and black brings a kind of stillness or quietness, almost like it’s shutting your senses down. So yeah, red might be my favorite, but it’s the one color I’d never want in my room—it’s just too stimulating.
What colors do your friends like most?
Honestly, black is the color my friends and I all gravitate toward. We grew up in an era of emo, and punk rock, where wearing black was practically a lifestyle. There was even a time when we went all out—think eyeliner and edgy outfits. I’m not exactly proud of it, but hey, that was the trend back then.
Even now, black still feels youthful and cool. Plus, it’s slimming, right? The downside is that black attracts dust and dandruff, and anything white really stands out on it. So, while we love it, we don’t wear it every day.
When it comes to gadgets, though, we’re all about black. I remember when white computers were everywhere, and then black ones became trendy—we all switched. Now white gadgets are making a comeback, but we’re sticking with black. It just feels timeless.
What’s the color you dislike? Why?
Champagne gold. For some reason, I can’t stand it, especially on anything other than phones. On gadgets, it can look sleek and sophisticated. But on clothes or everyday items? It looks dirty, almost like faded moss or a dull green. It’s supposed to look luxurious, but if it doesn’t have the right sparkle, it just comes across as cheap.
I actually have a funny story about this. I once wore a champagne gold shirt to the bank, and the teller treated me like I didn’t belong there—as if I looked broke or something! That experience was so embarrassing that I’ve stayed away from champagne gold ever since.
What’s your favorite color?
Besides black and red, there’s this one shade of blue I really like, but I can’t remember the exact name. It’s not navy blue—it’s darker but also richer, kind of like the blue you see in bank logos. It gives off this vibe of sophistication without being flashy.
People often use it in uniforms, and it has this formal, almost commanding presence. Like, if you think of a navy officer or an admiral, they wear something close to that shade of blue. It’s masculine, bold, and perfect for formal events.
For gadgets, though, I still prefer black. But when it comes to wearables or formal clothing, that darker blue is hands-down my favorite. I just wish I could remember the exact term for it!
