What do you usually do on your birthday?
As I’ve gotten older, I tend to celebrate my birthday less. It’s rare for me to have a cake; instead, I opt for a simple dinner with my family at my favorite spot and open a few presents. In the past, I used to work on my birthday, but now I just take the day off to spend quality time with my family.
What did you do on your birthday when you were young?
My family isn’t that well-off, so I cherish the memories of simple celebrations. A homemade cake and spaghetti prepared by my mom are what stand out the most. I also recall the excitement of getting freshly baked donuts from a nearby shop – that was something I always looked forward to. However, when I turned 13, we stopped these traditions.
Do you think it is important for you to celebrate your birthday?
Yes, celebrating milestones, particularly the first, seventh, and 18th birthdays, marks successes in life. It’s a way for individuals to feel uniquely special at least once a year. These occasions bring genuine happiness to both the celebrant and those who join in celebrating their birth.
Whose birthday do you think is the most important to celebrate in China?
It’s universally acknowledged that our parents and grandparents hold immense significance in our lives, and in a broader context, we recognize the importance of figures like our founding Chairman Mao. However, for us as Chinese, the paramount celebration revolves around the birth of our nation. This momentous occasion falls on October 1st, a week-long holiday during which families reunite to commemorate this event together.
