IELTS Speaking Part 1 – The area you live in

  • Do you like the area that you live in?
  • Where do you like to go in that area?
  • Do you know any famous people in your area?
  • What are some changes in the area recently?
  • Do you know any of your neighbors?
  • Are the people in your neighborhood nice and friendly?

1. Do you like the area that you live in?

Well, I can’t really complain. I’ve been living in this new town for almost two years now this November. I moved here from the city, so I had a lot of adjustments to make. Especially since I grew up in the city, moving to the countryside was quite a change for me. It probably took me about six months to get used to it, but after that, I got accustomed to it and started to enjoy the place. I even look forward to going to the park – there’s only one park around, but I’ve managed to adapt my lifestyle. Now, I’m quite comfortable here.

2. Where do you like to go in that area?

Well, we have this place called [Insert Place], which is a food hub. There’s a wide variety of food available, ranging from Singaporean cuisine to Indian dishes. They serve the best kebab I’ve ever tried, and there are also options like street-style fried fish and barbecue. One of the highlights is the live band that plays especially at night, creating a lively atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxation. Personally, I prefer going there around 5:00 in the afternoon. The place itself offers a lovely view of the mountains, making it a great spot to appreciate the sunset. As the evening progresses, the music gets louder, adding to the vibrant ambiance. The only downside I’ve noticed is that transportation is necessary. While I enjoy walking, it’s a bit dangerous to do so here, so having a ride is a must.

3. Do you know any famous people in your area?

Oh yes, I heard about a Ms. Philippines contestant. I don’t know her name or her face but she was the talk of the town for a few weeks. Even though she didn’t win the crown, she visited here and received a lot of love from the locals. During her welcome home parade, the atmosphere was quite festive. I’m situated near the road, so I caught a glimpse of the convoy passing by. However, I didn’t pay too much attention to it.

4. What are some changes in the area recently?

About 10 years ago, during my first visit here, I noticed that there were no fast food chains around. I’m quite a fan of fast food, so that was a bit disappointing back then. The lack of food establishments, including diners, made me less interested in returning. However, things have changed over the past couple of years. Small restaurant chains began to emerge, and more businesses started to set up shop. This transformation turned this place from a quiet countryside area into a bustling town. It’s been a remarkable change, and it’s great to see that we now have more dining options. As a result, we’ve started to attract more tourists to the area, which is a positive development.

5. Do you know any of your neighbors?

I’m familiar with them by sight, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say I know them personally. When they walk past me, I recognize them, but it’s not like I’m acquainted with the details of their lives. I do know, however, that they are distantly related to my wife’s family. During holidays and birthdays, they tend to visit, and it feels like we have a large extended family gathering. Living here has been a bit of an adjustment from what I’m used to. I used to reside in the city, where we didn’t pay much attention to our neighbors. But here, it’s quite different. It feels more like a close-knit community. Sometimes, people just strike up conversations with you, and it can be surprising when someone you’re not familiar with asks, “Who are you?”

6. Are the people in your neighborhood nice and friendly?

To some extent, they are quite friendly, and I believe that’s a reflection of their culture. While I’ve witnessed a verbal argument among them once, it was an isolated incident and doesn’t define their general behavior. Beyond that, they maintain a friendly demeanor. They even share food with each other during festivals, and there’s a strong sense of community. My kids often play with their kids, which highlights the family-oriented nature of this place.
