IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Books and Reading Habits
IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Books and Reading Habits
Which do you prefer, reading books or watching movies?
If I had to choose, I’d say watching movies or videos. Why? I think I might have a photographic memory—no proof, but it feels like it! I remember details from images and videos much better than from books. For example, if I watch a scientific documentary, I can recall those details even years later. But if I read the same information in a book, it’s gone within a week.
Movies and videos just work better for me, especially for learning. They help me retain knowledge, whether it’s for work or personal growth. Plus, I can speed up a video and finish an hour-long film in 40 minutes. That’s efficient! So yeah, I prefer watching over reading—it’s just how my brain works.
Have you ever read a novel that has been adapted into a film?
Most of the novels I’ve read haven’t been made into films, but a lot of the movies I’ve watched are based on books. For instance, I read 1Q84—great book, but no movie adaptation. Same with Psych—interesting read, but no film version. That said, I’ve had the reverse experience too. For example, I watched Harry Potter before reading the books. So, I’ve experienced both sides, but I definitely lean more toward watching the movies first.
Are your reading habits now different than before?
Absolutely. Back in the day, I used to read a thousand words daily—no problem. But now, my job doesn’t demand much reading, so I’ve fallen out of the habit. Honestly, it’s affected my ability to read long sentences. What used to be easy now feels like a chore.
Do you often read books? When?
Not really. These days, I mostly read technical documentation for work. The last time I picked up a book was in November, but I didn’t finish it because I got sick. And to be honest, I don’t feel motivated to go back to it. Whenever I try to read, I just get sleepy and end up napping instead.
Do you read more or less now than when you were younger?
Way less now. When I was a kid, we had an encyclopedia set at home, and I loved flipping through it. At first, I didn’t even know how to read properly, but I learned by looking at the pictures and trying to figure things out. Now, I barely read. I’m not as involved in my daughter’s education as I should be, and my job rarely requires heavy reading. So yeah, my reading habits have definitely slowed down compared to when I was younger.
